UX expert is the user’s best friend, whose first goal is to make sure the product meets the main requirements defining user-centered design."

Ms. Osichkina’s speech was followed by the panel discussion, where usability experts shared their ideas about the topic, bringing examples from their respective industries. UNLOCKING THE HIGH POTENTIAL OF UKRAINIAN-SWEDISH COOPERATION

June 19, 2015
The fourth Sweden-Ukraine Business Forum was held in Kyiv, on June 15-16th.  The goal of the Forum was to highlight Ukraine’s market potential and promote Sweden as an innovative and competitive business partner. The new Ukrainian government gave an update on the reforms implementation, their impact on running business in Ukraine, and upcoming business opportunities in different sectors of the economy.

The forum started on June 15th with the reception given by the Embassy of Sweden. His Excellency Andreas von Beckerath, the Ambassador of Sweden to Ukraine, noted in his welcoming addresses that the trade volume between our two countries could be much higher.

“I find the Swedish community quite optimistic regarding cooperation with Ukraine,” he emphasized. “There are two main reasons why Sweden is giving a closer look to Ukraine today. First is the Association Agreement with European Union that promotes trade, and the second is Ukrainian reform-minded government, supported by Europe.”

One of the greatest Swedish businessmen, philanthropist and the founder of Sigma AB, Dan Olofsson joined the Forum to show support and belief in the future of Ukraine.

“There is a very illustrative quote of Winston Churchill. He once said that pessimists see the troubles in the opportunities. Optimists, on the contrary, see opportunities in the troubles. I think Ukrainian people are optimistic. Despite our two countries have a long history of cooperation, Sweden still can — and should — do more.”

The second day of the Forum started with the press-conference that was followed by the debates panel, dedicated to reforms implementations in Ukraine. The keynote speaker, Minister of Finance Natalie Yaresko, has been speaking about the ways to make Ukraine more attractive for the foreign business:

“The main steps Ukraine should take to attract investments are to stabilize economics and create favorable business conditions.” She noted some of the business-related reforms that have been put in place over the last year in Ukraine, including corruption disabling, court system reformation, steps to energy independence, tax policy review and reducing budget deficit.

The second panel was dedicated to corporate social responsibility as a competitive advantage of companies. Vladimir Beck, Board Member at Sigma Software, was talking about the activities aimed at education and professional development of IT specialists in Ukraine and within the company.

“There are many ways to demonstrate the company`s dedication to social responsibility,” he comments. “Our company pays a great attention to the preparation of young specialists. Yearly about 300 students are engaged in various educational programs Sigma conducts jointly with 12 universities and up to 10 non-governmental educational establishments in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa and Lviv. We offer practical expertise in addition to general education. It`s not possible just to acquire the talent. We need to constantly participate in the ecosystem of the educational system to help this talent grow.”

The last debates panel was called to lighten the effective E-government solutions and their implementation in Ukraine. Michael Lauridsen, Business Development Manager and E-government expert at Sigma, took part in the panel, and mentioned:

“There is no need to invent technologies; these solutions were already implemented in Estonia, Sweden, and other countries. Use their experience and their knowledge. In Sweden, for example, we know the platforms, know the processes, and we would be glad to help.”

The event ended with a series of workshops powered by the partner companies. Valery Krasovsky, Sigma Software CEO, held a workshop “Outsourcing vs IT consulting” to clearly define the difference between these two terms and examine which one is applicable to Ukrainian IT export industry today.

“When the industry started back in 90th, most companies were doing outsourcing. Now the situation has changed. The IT companies have accumulated cross-industry expertise and experience with the market-leading customers in creation of the sophisticated and innovative software products and robust industry systems,” Valery states. “It is no longer the outsourcing. It is a mature and highly competitive IT consulting sector. And this sector is recognized as one of the most perspective in regard to the Swedish-Ukrainian cooperation.”

Sigma Software starts cooperation with Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University

May 28, 2015

Sigma Software marks the cooperation start with Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University. As university partner Sigma Software is going to take part in major activities dedicated to improvement of IT students’ education quality. This is the third educational institution in Odesa to partner with the company. The joint work has already been established with Odesa National Polytechnic University and STEP computer academy.

Information Technology is a very dynamic industry, every day the new technologies are coming. Therefore, knowing the latest trends is crucial for young specialists to stay highly sought on the job market. By contrast, the educational programs in universities are not always updated fast enough to correspond to companies` requirements.

Thus, the cooperation agreement between Odesa National University and Sigma Software foresees actions that can provide students with essential knowledge, valuable enough to be hired in any IT company. This includes educational program updates, regular presentations on trending technologies by the company representatives, drafting curriculum, courses and practice sessions for students of the University with Sigma Software employees as mentors and supervisors.

Eugene Yakovlev, Head of Educational Programs at Sigma Software Odesa office, shares his thoughts:

“Our company is well-known among Odesa students and last year even became a dream company to work in. This was possible due to our continuous work on education improvement in Odesa. We have been cooperating for years with ONPU and STEP academy, supported numerous user groups for students, and provided about 30 students a year with a possibility to have a practice in the company. This year we also supported two big students contests — Golden Byte, organized by STEP academy, and IT-Eureka, held within the Tempus program. We are very happy to start partnership with Odesa National University.”

“Every day more and more universities realize that without cooperation with business it is impossible to prepare professionals who will be in demand on the labor market,” adds Valery Krasovsky, CEO at Sigma Software. “It is very inspiring that business now can influence education quality, which is beneficial both for students and companies. The former can be more confident in their future and the latter can hire well-trained specialists.”

We are looking forward to meeting many bright talents with a strong will to learn and aspiration for growth,” shares Nataly Potapova, Head of Training Department at Sigma Software.

ELEKS Develops an Exclusive Android Wear App for Global Advertising Leader Havas

June 10, 2015 - Lviv, Ukraine – ELEKS, a global organization which creates innovative software solutions, created a unique, data-driven Android Wear application for Havas, one of the world’s largest communications groups. The app launched at the AdForum Worldwide Summit.

Havas’ participation in the AdForum Worldwide Summit brought about the need for the app. The summit is a high-profile, biannual advertising industry event for agency search and management consultants. The event, held in London April 15-17, gave ad industry leaders and worldwide business leaders a unique opportunity to share their perspectives and assess global advertising industry trends.

Havas selected ELEKS to develop a comprehensive and customizable real-time event guide app. ELEKS is known for innovative applications such as those for the Apple Watch and Android Wear.

The application itself was designed to work simultaneously on various different smartwatches and allows the watches to communicate with each other without the need for being tethered to Android phones. ELEKS completed the development of the application in just two weeks.

To overcome technical limitations, ELEKS built a server network, connecting 47 Moto 360 smartwatches to the network via Bluetooth. This infrastructure allowed the devices to stay interconnected and to communicate with the outside world without mobile phones. The watch app provided detailed professional and personal information about every summit participant while proposing promising business contacts to meet in a gamified way. The app also offered personalized watch faces and event schedules with immediate updates and notifications.

“It was an absolute pleasure working with the ELEKS team,” said Ben Silcox, Havas Chief Digital & Data Officer. “The thinking, speed, proactivity, support and delivery quality was first rate – a real surprise with a first engagement. I wish every partner we worked with was so service-driven.”

GlobalLogic teams win awards at Intel RealSense App Challenge

Two teams from GlobalLogic got impressive results at Intel RealSense App Challenge, an international contest.

More than 1300 projects from all over the world participated in Intel RealSense App Challenge. There are a few Ukrainian teams among the winners and awarded participants, and two of them represent GlobalLogic’s Ukrainian offices.

Emma App (Emotional Decoration), a project developed by a team from GlobalLogic’s Kyiv office, won a second prize at Intel contest. Based on Intel RealSense camera, this app recognizes emotions, gestures and voices of users, changes video chat’s background simultaneously and adds thematic animation according to user’s current mood.

App development involved solving many challenging problems such as precise recognition of facial expressions, automatic identification of the main object in front of the camera, background selection etc.

Another project, Theatre of Shadows developed by GlobalLogic Mykolaiv team, was awarded with a Trailblazer Recognition award for the creation of an innovative demo that pushed the boundaries of human-computer interaction.

This gaming app recognizes hands in front of the camera and displays their virtual “shadows” on a screen, turning them into animated characters. Although it seems simple, the project took significant efforts in development. The reason is that the standard API of the camera does not provide good recognition of fingers put together and gestures typical for the theatre of shadows.

‘For this reason we decided to use the options which are well-developed, such as foreground selection (hands, actually) with a depth camera,’ Kyrylo Gerasymenko, Theatre of Shadows developer, says.

EPAM Systems (NYSE:EPAM), a leading provider of software product development services, today announced that AccelEpi, a joint EPAM-UCB project, won the Bio-IT World Best Practices Award for Research and Drug Discovery. AccelEpi – Automated Accelerometric Detection of Epileptic Seizures in Rodents – is the first truly transformational technology platform that allows for a non-invasive, routine use of rodent models for research in drug discovery studies aiming at disease modification in epilepsy.

According to Dr. Rafal Kaminski, Head of Epilepsy at UCB, “The exceptional collaboration between UCB and EPAM Life Sciences resulted in an innovative discovery platform known as AccelEpi that accelerates the detection process of epileptic seizures in rodent experiments”. Dr. Kaminski explained that, “With such an innovative system, we may not only test drugs more quickly, but for the first time employ true disease models in antiepileptic drug discovery projects, which enables development of curative or disease-modifying therapies for patients with epilepsy”. In fact, as mentioned by Xavier Van Damme, the project leader, “AccelEpi is an excellent example of how multidisciplinary research involving signal analysis, software and IT infrastructure specialists working together with disease experts enables innovative drug discovery”.

“AccelEpi allows UCB to transition from measuring its drug candidates by their ability to fight induced seizures to proactively monitoring how those drug candidates reduce the rate of natural seizures in more true-to-life conditions,” said Richard Golob, Head of EPAM Life Sciences. “The platform is scaled to monitor up to 64 experimental animals in parallel, which enables running dose-response drug studies in real-time and significantly decreases the cost of experiments”.

Every year, Bio-IT World focuses attention on the critical role of IT in modern biomedical research and highlights platforms and strategies that can be shared across the industry to improve the quality, pace, and reach of science. “We are delighted once again to see such exceptional projects entered in this year’s competition,” said Allison Proffitt, editor of Bio-IT World. “The use of information technology has the potential to reinvigorate the life sciences in so many ways, and the winners of this year’s awards have shown creativity and initiative in applying these tools to problems large and small”.
